Key Stage One Swimming

Friday 22nd March 2019,

Dear Parents

The children in Key Stage One have all been eagerly awaiting their swimming lessons and the time has nearly come! Our first lesson will begin on Wednesday 1st May 2019. This forms part of the curriculum for Physical Education and we are very pleased to be able to provide weekly swimming lessons for our children from Key Stage One right through to Year Six. To enable this we require a contribution of £1.40 from each child per lesson, a total of £11.20 for the rest of the school year. Payment should be handed to the class teacher in a named envelope and cheques should be made payable to TRPS.

Children will require a suitable one-piece swimming costume or trunks (not shorts) and a towel. All of these items should be named to avoid any losses or mix ups. As with PE lessons no jewellery is permitted during swimming. If your child has pierced ears, all earrings must be removed prior to arrival at school as staff are not permitted to remove these. Goggles must not be worn unless there is a medical reason why these are necessary. In this case children must be able to put on and adjust these themselves and a consent form must be signed and handed back to your child’s class teacher before they will be permitted to wear them. The school will provide armbands, body belts and floats as necessary.

Parental help would be much appreciated to assist with changing.  We would like two helpers each week, and a rota will be displayed outside your child’s classroom before the lessons start. Ideally we are looking for parents who are able to commit to a few sessions each term, as due to child protection legislation you will be required to complete a school DBS check. These can be obtained from the school office.

Swimming helpers should arrive at the pool and meet us there to support with changing.

We will leave school at approximately 10.20am for our 11am lesson and should return to school by 12pm. Please arrive promptly at 10.30am at Brackley Leisure Centre so that we are able to get changed as soon as we get there.

As these swimming lessons may be tricky to begin with please ensure that girls are not wearing tights and ensure that the children have their swimming kit with them on a Wednesday!

Under the guidance of our qualified swimming instructors and class teachers the children will initially be split into swimming groups according to their ability in the water. As the groups become more settled they will be given a hat of a specific colour for their group. The school will purchase the first swimming hat for each child. Your child will then need their hat for every swimming lesson. These will be identified clearly with their name but please feel free to refresh these as they wear off. Please note that the hats will need to be dried off thoroughly and you may find that applying talcum powder prevents them from perishing. Subsequent hats required through loss or damage may be purchased from the school office at a cost of 50p. When your child moves groups a new coloured hat will be provided by the school. Although your child may already attend swimming lessons out of school time, for the majority it is normal for the children to begin their lessons with school, wearing a body belt and/or armbands. This is primarily for buoyancy and safety in the water, but it is also necessary to ensure correct body position to aid swimming strokes. As soon as we feel the children are ready, armbands and body belts will be removed.

Please complete the slip below and return to Miss Matthews by 5th April 2019.

Yours sincerely

Miss S Matthews
