Welcome to Year 2!

In Year 2 at The Radstone Primary School we want to continue to build on the foundations from Reception and Year 1 and prepare them for a smooth transition into Key Stage 2. 

Throughout the year we will be covering lots of exciting topics in all curriculum subjects. Some of these will include:
Great Fire of London, The Industrial Revolution, Local Industry, Pirates, Seaside Locations and Meerkat at Christmas.  

We will also be able to go on lots of exciting trips and have visitors coming into school that will help to enrich the children’s learning experiences.
                         

Some Key Information about Year 2 

Phonics - The children will take part in a daily phonics lessons as part of their school day. In these sessions they will learn new sounds and practise using these within both their reading and writing. You can find out more about phonics here. 

We have also attached a Suggested Reading List for your reference.  Also, as well as the children’s daily Phonics lessons they will visit the school Library at least once a week.

Reading - Alongside learning each set of phonic sounds, the children read RWI Storybooks that only contain the sounds and words they can read. This sets them up to succeed in their reading. We also teach children to read common exception words – words like ‘said’ and ‘they’.

PE lessons will take place on a Wednesday and a Friday with Mrs Keites & Mr Howard (PE Specialist Teachers). We would appreciate it if all children could bring a full, named PE kit/cold weather kit which will remain in school. Please can long hair be tied back and earrings be removed on this day. Please ensure all kit is named. 

Music will take place every week with Ms Wickham, a specialist Music Teacher. The children will learn exciting new songs and explore different instruments.

Art will take place every week with Mrs Fulford, a specialist Art Teacher.  The children will have Art in the Art/DT room and be able to explore colour and different media whilst producing their own works of Art.

Year 2 are taught by Miss Matthews (Assistant Headteacher/Key Stage 1 Leader), Miss Price (Class Teacher) & Mrs Brawn (Trainee Teacher). Supported by Mrs Brunning (TA), Mrs Emms (HLTA Wednesday) & Ms Pepper (HLTA Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri).
